HIGHLIGHTS: JUNE

The Estate Romana summer festival opens with the celebrations of the “Festa della Repubblica” (the Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic). The month of June is also the last opportunity to enjoy masterpieces by Munch and Canaletto and from the Guggenheim collection.
One should not miss the "Capolavori inaccessibili" (Hidden masterpieces) exhibition, a show featuring 170 new works by Botero, and also a show that examines the work and personality of Leon Battista Alberti.
Also of great interest is an exhibition which assembles all the new works purchased by Rome’s Contemporary Art Museum (Macro) in the last two years.

Major musical offerings abound in the month of June and include concerts by Mark Knopfler, Duran Duran, Elisa, and REM.
Many of the city’s summer music festivals open for business too: first of all the Jazz in the Villa Celimontana Festival which features music, theatre and comedy and besides exploring new sounds also boasts the participation of living legends Earth, Wind & Fire and Chic.
At the Fandango Jazz Festival the likes of Frankie Hi Nrg, Avion Travel and Stefano Bollani will perform.

Lots of space is given to experimental performances in theatre: different genres like music, theatre and cabaret, and different artists such as Dado, Simona Marchini, Lella Costa and Antonella Ruggiero, merge together in the Cosmpophonies Festival.

Top on the list of sporting events comes the BMW Ladies Italian Open, the key appointment in the Italian golfing season, in which 120 European athletes, professional players and VIP figures from the world of entertainment and finance will all take part.
At Villa Ada park a well-being event includes free shiatsu trials.

Finally, Rome invites us to a "Son et Lumière" event in Villa Borghese: lights, magic and music will allow one to relive history in an original and fascinating way. And in Piazza di Spagna the annual array of highly coloured azaleas graces the Spanish Steps.

From 16 Jun to 25 Sep:
Fernando Botero. Gli ultimi 15 anni (Fernando Botero. The last fifteen years)
At least 170 previously unseen works (among which paintings, drawings and sculptures) created by this original artist, born out of a Latin-American tradition and brought up on European painting: Fernando Botero has had shows in the most important American, European and Asian museums. The pulsating heart of the exhibition is the series of 50 paintings denouncing the horrors that took place at Abu Ghraib: in them prisoners are piled on top of one another, tied up, gagged and beaten. The large sections of colour and Botero’s typically ample proportions once again are a shout of indignation at social scandal, similar to his outcry in the 90s regarding the bloody events afoot at the time in his native Colombia.Tue-sun h10-19. €8, reduced €5

From June: Leon Battista Alberti a Roma. Umanisti e architetti alla scoperta dell'antico nel Quattrocento (Leon Battista Alberti in Rome. Humanists and architects discovering antiquity in the 1400s)
Leon Battista Alberti was a great architect, a writer in Latin and the popular language of the time, a scholar, the elaborator of mathematical perspective and an art theorist. Using ancient art as his starting point, he developed the theory that beautry is harmony and can be expressed mathematically between its whole and its parts: the "proportionality" of Roman buildings is at the base of architectural design. The exhibition contains ancient architectural pieces alongside drawings and journals of the time all bearing witness to his relationship with Rome.

ROME WITH A VIEW

VICTOR EMMANUEL MONUMENT (Vittoriale, or Altare della Patria, in Piazza Venezia)

Love it or loathe it, few can fail to be impressed by the pompous grandeur of the Victor Emmanuel monument. Take this chance to marvel at the sheer scale of the construction, admire the fin-de-siècle mosaics at close quarters - and have unsurpassed 360 degree views over the city from the dizzy terraces. Entrance is free.

Park of the Appian way - "Archeobus"
The Appian Way or "Regina Viarum" - Queen of Roads - of ancient Rome is the best preserved of ancient roads leading to Rome. As it was forbidden to bury within the city walls, it was flanked by many impressive graves - some still extant to this day. The road is still endowed with the ancient cobblestones, and it also flanked by impressive sights: the Circus of Maxentius (second largest after the Circus Maximus), the Tomb of Cecilia Metella, the majestic Villa dei Quintili, and finally various aqueducts, some 15 meters high (Claudius aqueduct). To preserve also the landscape around the road, the entire area surrounding was transformed into a lush archaeological park.
The Appian Way is very hard to reach by normal bus or taxi, so it is best visited with the specific "Archeobus", leaving from Piazza Venezia every day at 9:00 am and 5:00 pm. You can ask information and book every day except Sat., Sun. and holidays from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm – Tel: (+39) 0646954695
